Media Makeover

Design is often one of the first things overlooked when faced with deadlines or budget constraints. What people don't often realize, is that a professional designer can actually save you valuable time and money in the long run.

Makeover Assignment : Intranet Facility Site Map

This intranet web site was clearly designed by an amateur designer, who was probably given very little turn around time, and not given the "big picture" information regarding the purpose and goals for the site. They probably developed one page at a time, and didn't spend time up front planning the information architecture for the site.

Conclusion: The site design isn't consistent, the page layout and navigation is clunky, and the manner in which the information is presented to the user provides only fundamental assistance...where a specific facility is located.

Site Redesign

The redesign of this web site includes a more uniform design scheme, presenting a more solid look-and-feel. The navigation is expandable, clearly presenting the site's information architecture, which leads to a more user friendly and accessible site.

An imagemap was developed for the site, which gives the user a better overall sense of all of the facilities, and their relation to each other. The map is a "clickable" graphic which takes the user to facility-specific information, with links to more information such as floorplans, and photographs.

You can clearly see the extra time that went into the design and development of this site. But it should also be pretty clear that this site will be around for a while because of the solid and expandable design, and is much more efficient for users, in effect, saving the company time and money.
